Customized text-books and course-packs can be expensive due to the fees and markups charged by publishers. We, as a group of university faculty, cut off the fees and markups and provide the customized course materials at the royalties (plus online financial transaction and store maintenance fees) that we pay the copyright holders. So students pay less and copyright holders (content developers) are paid more.
